How To Adopt

Adoption Policy

Our goal for adopting animals into homes is to make the best match possible for people and animals. When someone is interested in adopting an animal, they must fill out an Adoption Application. Adoption of an animal is not on a first come, first served basis. Each adoption application is evaluated based on the needs of the animal and as such may take a few days to evaluate and process. We recommend the entire family come and visit with an animal to ensure it is the right and encourage “Meet & Greet” sessions with family dogs.

AMP may run specific adoption promotions on occasion. Reduced or waived fee specials may be possible due to donations and/or grants. These promotions serve to assist in reducing the length of stay for animals in the shelter as well as generate additional traffic to the shelter. Our policy on all adoptions is that we will ALWAYS take an animal back. We recognize that what appears to be the right match might not always prove to be so. We view this “open door” policy as critical to ensuring that the right fit is made for both animals and people.

Adoption Process

We will be happy to go over the process with you!

Apply
  • All persons interested in adopting from the Homer Animal Shelter must complete an adoption application as the first step in the application process.

  • Applicants must be at least 18 years old.

  • You can print an Adoption Application, or pick one up at the shelter. We will also need photo identification to go along with the application.

  • Applications are usually reviewed within two or three days, but depending on circumstances, it may take a little longer.

  • If we have multiple applications, we will call your references.

  • Once a decision is made we will contact you.

  • While you're waiting, come and visit. We appreciate it, and the animals do too!

Agree

If the application is approved, you must sign a legally binding Adoption Contract.

Read the contract carefully. By signing the adoption contract, you are agreeing to take proper care of the animal, provide for all of its needs, and if you ever find that you can no longer care for your animal, for whatever reason, you agree that you will return the animal to us. After your day of adoption, we may allow a five day trial period; if for whatever reason you are finding it is not a good fit we will give you your money back. Though with that being said we have an open-door policy so regardless of the length of time that has passed, as mentioned above, we will take any animal back.  A follow-up phone call may be made to assist you with any questions and/or concerns you may have.

Remember, we are here to help you! If your have any questions or concerns, either before or after you get your new pet home, please do not hesitate to call us.
